I'd buy a round hair brush. They can't be expensive as the other things right?

With regards to you going into town to buy lunch, have you ever tried just making all your lunches instead? You will find you save a hell of a lot of money doing so in a month that you may even have the spare cash to reward yourself with a gadget.

Well isn't what Money Saving Export Martin says, if you still want something (in this case the tripod) a week/month/year later then you really do want it (may still not need it of course ;) ) so probably worth seriously considering after lent.

And you can challenge yourself to use it to make it a worthwhile purchase. I'd like to upgrade my camera which is part of why I'm forcing myself to use the old one and doing project365. So I can prove the new one would get use, and I'd need to keep using it once the first month new gadget glow goes, and I get to hopefully improve in photographic terms in the meanwhile!

I think it's a great idea. I'm sort of trying it myself this year, well as long as I can anyway. I do need to budget but also I've a lot of stuff I could already be enjoying rather than adding to it.

dollface? Doll Face? lol, I miss you

The point is not to save up but to reduce spending, if I save up and then spend it it'll be the same as if I just spend

Good luck, dollface...
Why don't you put all the money you don't spend in a jar? Then at the end of 40 days, you might be able to afford another holiday. :)

I might not be quite up to your level of Geek credentials, but I already know my Mum has bought my Grandparents a new TV... I'll be writing the adapted guide to the remote control complete with cartoon diagrammes!

Oh, and a full two days in the village the Internet forgot! Help!

Mwahaha the advantages of being a non-tech geek are becoming apparent! No one ever asks me to explain the workings of washing-up liquid or what the density of water is (although apparently I'm pretty good at pouring things accurately).

We're a family of techies, so I'm afraid it's my brother (the IBM hardware support engineer) who gets all the screwdriver related jobs, while I pick up the software problems. My dad is technical engouh to fix his own Windows problems, my wife knows the +ve end of a battery when she sees one and even my mum can manage to fill her car with fuel on her own. It's not so bad really. :-)
